Monroe Health Foundation

Monroe Health Foundation … Celebrating nine years of providing healthcare assistance for citizens in Monroe County and surrounding areas.
Mission Statement: To meet the healthcare needs of the community through volunteer leadership, gifting programs, and special events.
OUR MISSION

Monroe Health Foundation was founded in 1998 as a 501-c organization to meet the healthcare needs of our community through volunteer leadership, gifting programs, and special events. While most members of the community are familiar with the $1.2 million campaign to build the Southwest Alabama Community Cancer Center, the Foundation has many other active funds. Through our various programs of giving, over $1.7 million has been donated to healthcare initiatives in Monroe County.
AVENUES OF GIVING

As a 501-c organization, Monroe Health Foundation is eligible for grant money that is not available to a county hospital. MHF has received grants that have enabled us to provide dental services to rural residents, to provide a part-time Diabetes Education Nurse for teaching in the hospital setting as well as the community. MHF is constantly seeking grant dollars to improve the healthcare for area residents.

Annual benefits enable us to purchase additional equipment for Monroe County Hospital that most rural hospitals can only dream of acquiring. The first fundraiser, “Barnyard Benefit”, raised over $30,000 that was used to renovate the outpatient clinic in memory of charter board member, Dr. Tim Jones and his wife, Nancy. With the $31,000 raised from the 2005 benefit, “Motown Madness”, a sentinel node seeker was purchased for the surgery department as well as stretchers for the emergency room. The $41,000 raised in 2006 from “Tank Tops and Flip Flops” was used to purchase a portable x-ray machine for the radiology department and a pulse oximetrey system for the intensive care unit. Monies from “Drive for the Cause” will be used to acquire a BAC T 3-D Alert machine for the hospital laboratory. Physicians’ facilities will also have access to use of this machine. Plans are been made for the 5th Annual Benefit in memory for David Frost, CRNA.

The Foundation has sponsored a Diabetic Walk/ Ride fundraiser in the fall for the past three years. Almost $65,000 has been raised to purchase insulin, diabetes supplies, educational materials and equipment, sponsor kids for diabetes camp and cover expenses for community outreach projects. Our local diabetic program is the only certified program between Montgomery and Mobile.

Monroe Health Foundation is a recipient of United Way funds. Through donations from the community to United Way of Monroe County, we have purchased jaundice meters, a birthing room warmer, a colonoscope for the surgery department, emergency room stretchers, and blood pressure monitors for the recovery room. United Way also donated $25,000 to the capital campaign to build the cancer treatment center.

Art for Living showcases the artistic talents of individuals to create t-shirts and Christmas cards. Shirts are offered for gift giving at Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. Funds from the breast cancer awareness shirt sold in October and from the Christmas t-shirts and photo greeting cards help to support the local cancer treatment center. The Art for Living program has contributed over $25,000 to the Foundation.

Other donations come in the forms of memorial or honorary gifts, jewelry sales and other miscellaneous donations and fundraisers. Donors can remember the Foundation in their estate planning by listing it in their wills. Stocks, bonds, and real estate are also excellent ways to contribute.

All foundation funds are used to better our community’s healthcare resources. Monroe County Hospital graciously donates the salaries and office space for the Foundation staff.
